Rehabilitation of the waterfront areas in the city

Bratislava - Petržalka

The right sided waterfront of the Danube river in Bratislava, as the beginning of the middle flow inland delta, was naturally exploited for recreational and time-out zone in the city. It was changed in 1970-ties, whith the huge new housing and residential development in Petržalka. Complex urban design project, which won the international competition for the locality, was realized only partly – in housing structures. Other proposed functions and structures, together with the missing complex traffic solution were not completed. Thus the residential zone for 120 thousands new residents remained curtailed and not full valued, exploited mostly as the „sleeping“ zone, without adequate amenities, working opportunities, connections. The right sided central public space remained not completed. Later, the by-pas of the E75 highway from Prague and Brno to Vienna, Budapest or Žilina, was situated in Petržalka, just in the connection of residential zone on one side and recreational waterfront zone on the other side. The road with 8 stripes for vehicles was constructed on the ground and thus created an enormous physical barrier to the possible recreational and amenities area near the Danube river. The concept of design solutions, new ideas for the area and the rehabilitation of the waterfront zone with the maximum utilization of digital sources and 3D modelling, is the topic for the Specialized CAD Studio Design at Faculty of Architecture Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava in the winter semester 2011.

Anotácia k zadaniu

Pravobrežné nábrežie Bratislavy, ako začiatok vnútrozemskej delty na strednom toku Dunaja sa prirodzene využívala na rekreačné a oddychové aktivity mesta. Zmena nastala v 70-tich rokoch minulého storočia, kedy sa preniesol rozvoj obytných zón Bratislavy do Petržalky. Komplexný urbanistický návrh, ktorý vyšiel z medzinárodnej súťaže však realizoval len jeho bytovú časť bez dobudovania ostatných funkcii, ktoré spolu s riešením dopravy mali zabezpečiť plnohodnotné – komplexné obytné –životné prostredie Petržalky s polyfunkčným celomestským pravobrežným centrom. Pravobrežné celomestské centrum tak ostalo ako nedoriešená časť , s mnohými urbanistickými problémami a zároveň s novými súčasnými nárokmi na toto územie ako výzva pre naplnenie jeho funkcie a obrazu v štruktúre mesta. Riešenie špecializovaného CAAD ateliéru má za cieľ v širších výťahoch naznačiť význam a súvislosti pravobrežného centra v štruktúre Bratislavy s hlavným dôrazom na riešenie urbánnej štruktúry vyjadrenej v 3D modeli s využitím súčasného digitálneho modelu Bratislavy.

Bratislava Ehxibitions - Big Camp

Faculty of Architecture Slovak University of Technology Bratislava is a partner in the european Erasmus Life Long Learning project Oikodomos since 2007. Core issue of the project activities is related with the creation and consolidation of the international on-line and off-line campus in the european housing studies. Innovative training programme integrates the international, multicultural and interdiscplinary values based on the long distance cooperation of partners institutions, involved associative partners, academics as well as non-academic environment, so as one of the ambitions of the project is the involvement of experts from the practice, municipalities, elected members and citizens. Project deals with the actual issues of nowadays housing and is looking for the innovative solutions in the architectural and urban design housing concepts which corresponds with the social, economic and technological challenges of the contemporary european society. It generates the possibilities for the powered collaboration between universities, with the participation of municipalities and social institutions in partner countries in the complex housing solutions. It creates virtual studio design environment, which enables students works and collaboration at long distance. The ambitions is the wide disscussions and documentations of young generation on the contemporary housing issues.

Within the project activities Faculty of Architecture Slovak University of Technology Bratislava organized in October 2009 third Oikodomos international workshop. The main topic for the semester studio designs and seminar works was the design of „Effective housing“. The initiative bring forth from the collective of FA STU professors (Viera Joklová, Andrea Bacová, Marián Maľovaný, Zuzana Tóthová, Ľubica Vítková, Henrich Pifko) with the close cooperation with the Bratislava- Dúbravka municipality (Ján Sandtner – Mayor, Zuzana Aufrichtova). Faculty was looking for the design locality for the international cooperation and Dubravka municipality in that time prepared the elaboration of the urban study of the Big Camp zone. Billateral negotiations started in May 2009, in October 2009 Faculty hosted international workshop with the assignment of Big Camp.

The aim was to formulate and design the effective housing scenario on the architectural and urban design levels, which respects the natural and cultural conditions of the locality, the possibilities of traffic connections with the other parts of the city, respects the requirements of low energy design and sustainable design, respect variable living periods and situations in the adaptable and flexible housing design, by the application of adequate urban design density and optimal mix-used structures. The collaboration continued after the workshop online, using the web environments of Oikodomos campus: www.oikodomos.org/workspaces and www.oikodomos.org/caserepository, free videoconferencing tools Skype, Teamviewer, groupware applications GoogleGroup, etc.

Participation of the partners with different study focuses – architecture, urban design or spatial planning brought the interdisciplinary view on the issue of effective housing design with the multicultural specifications.

In March and April 2010 were presented two public exhibitions of the selected student posters and models of the Big Camp area. They were accepted with the interest of academics, as well as non-academics – Dubravka citizens, elected members. They offer a lot of inspirations for the executor of the official urban study, architect Krampl. Student works verified the possibilities of the various forms of development of the site, they were full of youthfull inventions and ideals. They offer the optimal input for the elaboration of the urban documentation of such type and size. On the other hand, students welcome the comments from the practice, citizens, local municipality.

The exhibition was re-installed in June and July 2011 in the public Gallery of architecture at the Association of Slovak Architects in Balassa palace in old town of Bratislava and smaller exhibition was presented in September 2011 at the international workshop and Summer school at FA STU. The presented works were completed by the works of the students from the Institute of Town Planning at FA STU.

On the exhibition was present prof.Lubica Vitkova - the Dean of FA STU, arch. Ingrid Konrad – Bratislava chief architect, arch.Vladimir Hrdy – Bratislava magistrate, prof.Stefan Slachta - Association of Slovak Architects, Dubravka local council members and citizens.

Fakulta architektúry STU v Bratislave je od roku 2007 partnerom v medzinárodnom vzdelávacom projekte Oikodomos, ktorý sa zaoberá problematikou vytvorenia a konsolidácie medzinárodného vzdelávacieho kampusu v oblasti architektúry bývania. Vzdelávanie integruje medzinárodný, multikultúrny a interdisciplinárny pohľad na problematiku, nakoľko spája európske vzdelávacie inštitúcie v architektúre, urbanizme a priestorovom plánovaní, snaží sa zapájať do vzdelávacích aktivít aj odborníkov z praxe, mestské samosprávy a občanov. Partnermi projektu sú univerzity a výskumné centrá z Belgicka, Francúzska Slovenska, Španielska, Švajčiarska, Veľkej Británie a Tureckej časti Cypru. Projekt Oikodomos sa zaoberá aktuálnymi problémami bývania a hľadaním inovatívnych riešení, ktoré korešpondujú so sociálnymi, ekonomickými a technologickými výzvami súčasnej európskej spoločnosti. V neposlednom rade vytvára možnosti pre aktívnu spoluprácu univerzít s mestskými zastupiteľstvami a spoločenskými organizáciami v partnerských krajinách pri riešení komplexných problémov bývania. Snaží sa vytvoriť virtuálny ateliér, v ktorom sa študenti budú na diaľku spájať a spoločne tvoriť. Cieľom projektu je zdokumentovať názor mladej generácie, ako má vyzerať bývanie súčasnej Európy, čo je mimoriadne široký a aktuálny záber.

V rámci projektových aktivít Fakulta architektúry v októbri 2009 organizovala workshop v Bratislave a súvisiace vzdelávacie aktivity. Nosnou témou pre ateliérové zadania a semináre medzinárodných tímov bolo „Efektívne bývanie“. Iniciatíva témy a spolupráce s MČ Bratislava Dúbravka vyšla z FA STU (kolektív: Ing.arch.Viera Joklová,PhD., doc.Ing.arch. Marián Maľovaný, PhD., doc.Ing.arch.Andrea Bacová, PhD., Ing.arch.Zuzana Tóthová, PhD., doc.Ing.arch.Ľubica Vítková, PhD., Ing.arch.Henrich Pifko, PhD.), ktorá ako partner projektu Oikodomos hľadala lokalitu pre medzinárodný urbanisticko-architektonický ateliér s témou návrhu efektívneho bývania, pričom dôležitým parametrom bola aktuálnosť a previazanosť s praxou. Keďže Mestská časť Bratislava Dúbravka v tom čase pripravovala zadanie pre urbanistickú štúdiu zóny Veľkej lúky, bolo aj v jej záujme spolupracovať s Fakultou architektúry. Vzájomné rokovania začali v máji 2009, v októbri 2009 FA STU organizovala a hosťovala medzinárodný workshop projektu Oikodomos so zadaním Veľkej lúky. Jeho cieľom bolo formulovať efektívny rozvoj bývania, ktorý rešpektuje prírodné a kultúrne špecifiká lokality, možnosti dopravného napojenia s mestom, rešpektuje parametre nízkoenergetického a k životnému prostrediu priateľského dizajnu, rešpektuje rôzne životné cykly a situácie v adaptabilnom dizajne bývania, pri uplatnení požadovaných hustôt zástavby a vytvárania multifunkčných priestorov. Práca na zadaní pokračovala aj po skončení workshopu v závislosti od konkrétnych špecializácií partnerov, komunikácia a odovzdávanie skúseností prebiehali diaľkovou formou, s podporou nástrojov informačno-komunikačných technológií s cieľom vytvorenia medzinárodnej a multidisciplinárnej platformy pre generalizovaný model efektívneho bývania. V marci a apríli 2010 sa uskutočnili dve vernisáže vybraných urbanistických študentských projektov, ktoré sa stretli so záujmom profesorov a študentov, ako aj dúbravskej verejnosti a boli inšpiráciou pre spracovateľa urbanistickej štúdie, Ing. arch. Dušana Krampla z ateliéru Hugpro, s.r.o. Študentské práce boli pre neho zdrojom inšpirácie, ale aj overenia toho, čo dané územie urbanisticky „znesie“. Poskytujú plnú škálu ideových návrhov na riešenie predmetného územia projektovaných s ľahkosťou študentských ideálov „nezaťažených“ procedurálnymi obmedzeniami, ktoré si vyžaduje schvaľovanie dokumentácie tohto typu. Sú pozitívnym živým vstupom do procesu obstarávania štúdie a spracovateľovi slúžia ako nezáväzný podklad pri návrhu. Študenti na druhej strane vítajú pripomienky z praxe aj od občanov, pre ktorých vlastne budú navrhovať.

Výstava, ktorú pripravila Fakulta architektúry STU v Bratislave v spolupráci s MČ Bratislava Dúbravka, sa realizovala v dúbravskom Dome kultúry od 4. do 18. marca 2011 a prezentovala Návrh urbanistickej štúdie zóny Veľká lúka, Bratislava - Dúbravka, ktorého obstarávateľom je Mestská časť Bratislava - Dúbravka; v druhej časti prezentovala súbor študentských prác Fakulty architektúry STU (z Ústavu urbanizmu a územného plánovania a Kabinetu počítačových a multimediálnych disciplín), ako aj medzinárodných študentských tímov v rámci projektu Oikodomos spolu s urbanistickými modelmi zaoberajúcich sa územím Veľká lúka.

Vernisáž k výstave uskutočnila 4.marca 2011 o 17.00 vo výstavných priestoroch galérie Villa Rustica Domu kultúry Dúbravka v Bratislave, za účasti dekanky FA STU,doc.Ing.arch.Ľubice Vítkovej, PhD., starostu MČ Bratislava Dúbravka Ing. Jána Sandtnera, zástupcov územného rozvoja a poslancov Dúbravky. Na otvorení nechýbali občania, ktorí priamo s odborníkmi diskutovali o predložených návrhoch Veľkej lúky. Verejné prerokovanie Návrhu Urbanistickej štúdie zóny Veľká lúka, Bratislava - Dúbravka sa uskutoční 14.marca 2011.

Aktuálna výstava, ktorá je od 29. júna do 15. júla 2011 inštalovaná v Galérii architektúry Spolku architektov Slovenska v Balassovom paláci na Panskej ulici č.15 prezentuje výber študentských prác s urbanistickými modelmi zaoberajúcich sa územím Veľká lúka. Tieto práce boli spracované v rámci mezinárodného workshopu Oikodomos na FA STU v Bratislave, ako aj v rámci urbanistických ateliérov na Ústave urbanizmu a územného plánovania a špeciálneho ateliéru v Kabinete počítačových a multimediálnych disciplín na FA STU.

V rámci výstavy bol prezentovaný aj výsledný Návrh urbanistickej štúdie zóny Veľká lúka, Bratislava - Dúbravka. Prerokovanie návrhu je vo finálnej fáze, v súčasnosti sa vyhodnocujú vznesené pripomienky k návrhu.

Vernisáž výstavy sa uskutočnila 29. júna o 17:00, za účasti pani dekanky FA STU, doc.Ing.arch. Ľubice Vítkovej, PhD., prof.Ing.arch. Štefana Šlachtu, zástupcu Spolku architektov Slovenska, prof. Jána Tucneho z partnerskej univerzity z francúzskeho Grenoblu, ktorý sa pripojil diaľkovo cez videokonferenčný telemost. Zúčastnili sa zástupcovia bratislavského magistrátu Ing.arch. Vladimír Hrdý, spravodajských agentúr SITA (Ján Lorincz) a TASR, dúbravskí obyvatelia a poslanci, študenti a učitelia FA STU.

Práca študentov bola náročná na čas, schopnosti a koordináciu v tíme.
Students worked in international teams, solving the proximity issues on selected

site at Göksu, the workflow was challenging. It was good opportunity to disscuss

professional questions with foreign schoolmates from various cultures and schools and to agree

on common results.

Príjemnou zmenou bola večera a posedenie so slovenským ambasádorom Ing.Jozefom Šestákom, PhD. a jeho manželkou, ktorí nám porozprávali zaujímavosti z tureckého prostredia.

Welcome change was the common dinner with slovak embassador Dr.Jozef Šesták and his wife, who told FASTU team of students and teachers a lot about domestic habits in Turkey and Istanbul, about their way of living, housing, working.

Plavba loďou k riešenej lokalite Göksu.

Participants of the workshop are sailing to the solved locality of Göksu, which lays on the Asian part of Istanbul. The trip was a good opportunity to perceive the atmosphere of the metropolis with 17 millions inhabitants, which coextends on both sides of Bosporus and water represents important transportation facility.

Bratislava Dúbravka - Big Camp, design of the effective housing and new residential district

Involvement of public

Faculty of Architecture Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava innitiated in May 2009 the successful cooperation with the Local Council Dúbravka. Their cooperation in the project Oikodomos started with the specification of the locality of Big Camp in Dúbravka, which was selected for the Bratislava workshop and related learning activities. All educational partners in the project were solving the effective housing design on this site. The results (presented at http://www.oikodomos.org/workspaces) were very interesting, integrating multicultural and interdisciplinary views on the issue. International students works were very inspiring, attracting the concern of Dúbravka inhabitants, ellected members and profesionals as well. The best designs generated the bases for the design of official Urban Study, which were initiated for the purpose of changing of the Master Plan in the locality, from specified agricultural land (cca 100 hectares) to new residential district.

Bratislava Dúbravka - Design of central areas for identity and integrity of residential areas.

Faculty of Architecture Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava continued in winter term 2010 in the successful cooperation with the Local Council Dúbravka. Students of the 4th year of bachelor study within the specialized studio design with ICT solved the central areas of Dúbravka. The members of Local council, elected members and citizens were involved to the learning process at the locality programme information, project development consultations, final presentations and public exhibition.

Mapping the proximity - Bratislava suburbs

Architecture and urban planning are part of the physical manifestation of our society, expressive of its values and its resources. Buildings, landscapes and cities are spatial expressions of human activities, social processes and institutions. Today the social and cultural milieu in which architects work is rapidly changing. They must be able to translate needs and resources of the society into relevant solutions of living environment. Architects must address the emerging problems of the day both practically and theoretically. Suburban housing is in the process of the town development the phenomenon, which substantially affects the characteristics of the living environment. Current trends represent the two different directions of the construction of new residential areas.

One way focuses on extensive form of construction at the edges of cities and rural settlements without a comprehensive settlement of the services and amenities, and the second by densification of already existing residential structures which were built in the past, in contact with the existing areas. The problem of the construction of the current suburban residential zones is deficient solution in terms of application of the factors that contribute to the harmonisation of the living environment. This is the economic, social, environmental and cultural factors. In the construction of the residential units are missing in the spectrum of features that significantly contribute to the quality of the living environment and bringing it to the city way of life.

The main starting point in the development of the living environment should be the application of the principles of sustainable development. These principles are reflected in the architectural design which should ensure the necessary level and capacity development of the housing.

As a response to the problems of suburban development is the first-rate attention devoted to high-quality processing of territorial plans, use of the sites that have lost their original function and the revitalization of existing estates.

The role of architects is to develop the future housing schemes which will find appropriate solutions of the broad scope of problems connected with the suburban housing.

Faculty of Architecture Slovak University of Technology Bratislava presents the Design Studio dealing with the proximity issues and the barriers in the east development area of Bratislava, which is generated by the big refinery Slovnaft.

The scheme shows the placement, distance and surface of the refinery to the city centre. Surrounding residential areas are divided by the refinery.

Flexibility and variability in housing

Flexibility and variability in the housing concepts can be defined as the design of the housing structures with the understanding of prospective development of the site, life and social scenarios; with the possibility to make appropriate changes in the housing environment, structure or unit. Variability and flexibility is the ability to change a living environment and to adapt it according to new requirements. It can be applied in urban and architectural scale in relation with the urban or architectural structure.

In the urban context it applies mainly for the structure of amenities of a city (community) - when designing specific areas for shops, services, offices, entertainment, leisure time activities and culture. Variable and flexible structure of amenities of the city (community) offers an attractive "mixture" of different functions, that can be joined together in different ways to multi-function (point-concentrated) units: shopping malls, multipurpose complexes, courthouses and amusement parks.

Public spaces fulfill the role of a connecting framework when combining individual amenities. Public spaces may offer a number of variable and flexible elements which increase their attractiveness of use and may also change their function. Variable and flexible urban structure, in the final outcome - in the wider context, improves the quality of housing which is in direct relation to such structures.

In the architectural context, the flexibility and variability binds to a specific space, which is designed in such way that it has the ability to change – vary its functional use. Apartment as a base unit of housing should be able to respond to changes (variability) and to adapt to these changes (flexibility).

Variable apartment is a dwelling with layout which allows for certain simple and inexpensive modifications, while the total area of the apartment remains unchanged (does not increase or decrease). Variable apartment allows changing its layout by inexpensive modifications to the whole building.
