Bratislava Ehxibitions - Big Camp

Faculty of Architecture Slovak University of Technology Bratislava is a partner in the european Erasmus  Life Long Learning project Oikodomos since 2007. Core issue of the project activities is related with the creation and consolidation of the international on-line and off-line campus in the european housing studies. Innovative training programme integrates the international, multicultural and interdiscplinary values based on the long distance cooperation of partners institutions, involved associative partners, academics as well as non-academic environment, so as one of the ambitions of the project is the involvement of experts from the practice, municipalities, elected members and citizens. Project deals with the actual issues of nowadays housing and is looking for the innovative solutions in the architectural and urban design housing concepts which corresponds with the social, economic and technological challenges of the contemporary european society. It generates the possibilities for the powered collaboration between universities, with the participation of municipalities and social institutions in partner countries in the complex housing solutions. It creates virtual studio design environment, which enables students works and collaboration at long distance. The ambitions is the wide disscussions and documentations of young generation on the contemporary housing issues.

Within the project activities Faculty of Architecture Slovak University of Technology Bratislava organized in October 2009 third Oikodomos international workshop. The main topic for the semester studio designs and seminar works was the design of „Effective housing“. The initiative bring forth from the collective of FA STU professors (Viera Joklová, Andrea Bacová, Marián Maľovaný, Zuzana Tóthová, Ľubica Vítková, Henrich Pifko) with the close cooperation with the Bratislava- Dúbravka municipality (Ján Sandtner – Mayor, Zuzana Aufrichtova). Faculty  was looking for the design locality for the international cooperation and Dubravka municipality in that time prepared the elaboration of the urban study of the Big Camp zone. Billateral negotiations started in May 2009, in October 2009 Faculty hosted international workshop with the assignment of Big Camp.

The aim was to formulate and design the effective housing scenario on the architectural and urban design levels, which respects the natural and cultural conditions of the locality, the possibilities of traffic connections with the other parts of the city, respects the requirements of low energy design and sustainable design, respect variable living periods and situations in the adaptable and flexible housing design, by the application of adequate urban design density and optimal mix-used structures. The collaboration continued after the workshop online, using the web environments of Oikodomos campus: www.oikodomos.org/workspaces and www.oikodomos.org/caserepository, free videoconferencing tools Skype, Teamviewer, groupware applications GoogleGroup, etc.
Participation of the partners with different study focuses – architecture, urban design or spatial planning brought the interdisciplinary view on the issue of effective housing design with the multicultural specifications.

In March and April 2010 were presented two public exhibitions of the selected student posters and models of the Big Camp area. They were accepted with the interest of academics, as well as non-academics – Dubravka citizens, elected members. They offer a lot of inspirations for the executor of the official urban study, architect Krampl. Student works verified the possibilities of the various forms of development of the site, they were full of youthfull inventions and ideals. They offer the optimal input for the elaboration of the urban documentation of such type and size. On the other hand, students welcome the comments from the practice, citizens, local municipality.


The exhibition was re-installed in June and July 2011 in the public Gallery of architecture at the Association of Slovak Architects in Balassa palace in old town of Bratislava and smaller exhibition was presented in September 2011 at the international workshop and Summer school at FA STU. The presented works were completed by the works of the students from the Institute of Town Planning at FA STU.
On the exhibition was present prof.Lubica Vitkova  - the Dean of FA STU, arch. Ingrid Konrad – Bratislava chief architect, arch.Vladimir Hrdy – Bratislava magistrate, prof.Stefan Slachta -  Association of Slovak Architects, Dubravka local council members and citizens.
